Success in Writing

WR 195 Writing Lab

The WR 195 Writing Lab provides free writing support services for students enrolled in Writing 121z, 122z, or 123, including help with drafting, understanding assignment prompts and instructions, interpreting peer and instructor feedback, and revision strategies.

There are two ways for any student enrolled in a 100-level WR class to use the Writing Lab:

  • Book an individual tutoring appointment when needed. Come in once during the term or regularly. Find directions for booking appointments below.
  • Sign up for WR 195 to receive regular tutoring for credit. WR 195 is a 1-credit course that helps you get the most out of your WR 121z, WR 122z, or WR 123 writing class with a minimum of seven appointments.

WR 195

Students should choose WR 195 if they:

  • Know that one-on-one support helps them as a student and writer;
  • Worry about writing specifically; or
  • Like having more set time to do hands-on practice.

Register for WR 195 on DuckWeb by the beginning of week two, then book at least seven individual appointments to earn credit. Find directions for booking appointments below.

WR 195 is P/NP. Students must be enrolled in a 100-level WR course to register for WR 195.

Benefits of the Writing Lab

Students find the sessions useful in completing specific writing assignments. They also often feel they improved more than they would have without the Writing Lab support.

Faculty teaching WR classes report that their students who use the Writing Lab feel confident and invested in their writing.

Writing Support Specialists report that building relationships to help students grow as writers and students is one of the most rewarding aspects of the Writing Lab experience.

Writing Support Specialists

Writing Support Specialists are Graduate Employees in English and related fields trained to support students working on writing assignments in WR 121z, WR 122z, and WR 123. Writing Support Specialists are prepared to help students with any stage of writing: finding ideas, outlining and planning, synthesizing ideas, drafting, revising, and more. Students can choose to make multiple appointments with the same Writing Support Specialist or choose to work with different specialists at each session.
